The metaphor woven into my portfolio is taking care of houseplants. While I was a casual hobbyist prior to COVID-19, I have become a committed plant parent since. Similarly, my relationship with technology and teaching has evolved since the beginning of the program, to now.
Upon first glance, my apartment isn’t ideal for houseplants—while I do have a lovely large window, it is north-facing with limited hours of sunlight. Furthermore, my home is very dry rather than the humid environment most beautiful houseplants crave. This mirrors my current technology environment at my school. I must "work with what I have," limitations and all. While we have some technology, it is shared amongst twelve classrooms. Moreover, despite best intentions to invest in more, our school lacks the knowledge and resources to procure technology that would best fit our teachers and learners. Prior to the start of this program, what I thought was transformative technology integration was in fact a consistent oscillation between adoption and adaptation levels on the Technology Integration Matrix. |
Plants all have the same basic needs: the right kind of light, water delivered when needed, and soil management to ensure happy roots. |
No one starts off with a deep understanding of how to raise thriving, happy houseplants. This is also true about our school environments: changing and cultivating meaningful learning environments require intentional study so that we can evaluate and improve upon current practices. This takes time, investment, failure, humility, and a willingness to try new things.

Each section of the portfolio compares different aspects of plant care with my MET experience. There is no required linear path for this portfolio but if you would like to slowly unfurl the metaphor, you are welcome to go "in order" using the navigation menu either at the top left corner, or at the bottom of each page.
